Musketeers of Naft

Muskteers of naft at one if it's harbors

The Kingdom of Naft was a early modern monarchy in north-central Aels.

Naft originated in the southwest of the Skager peninsula after an invasion by the forces of Thulian Naft of an orc kingdom at the 2730 a.a.H, founded by descendants of Roccasone, and will remain as a sovereign state until the 3155 a.a.H when after the Anglasecuarnian Wars, was merged into the Kingdom of Ingoland.

Naft in their origins was a decentralized state while Thulian Naft began his rule as a primus-inter-pares king, a mercenary commander turned into a King of questionable legitimacy, his successors made an increasingly centralized state, expanding the monarchy's absolute power -especially in the Age of Queens of Naft-

HistoryEdit

RoccasoneEdit

Allied Colonization Following the First War of the PowerEdit

After the defeat of the first Dark Legion of Demons in First War of the Power, the human-elven alliance made several attempts to settle down in the region of Polforia during the Middle Human Age. human settlers arrived to colonize and attempt to form the lands of Polforia as their new home. This was done as part of an allied initiative to prevent remaining Dark Legion forces from rebuilding in Polforia, and to build human, and some grey elven, colonies in these former demon controlled lands.

Due to the instability of the region, many of these new colony attempts soon failed, but some were more successful than others.

Roccasone Founded as a Gate CityEdit

The City of Roccasone, founded at the 2227 a.a.H would be one of the most successful colonial realms founded in Polforia: a city guarding the mountains paths to the Northwestern Kingdoms in the Dargoina Mountains -the Degoland pass-. Due to their location as an entrance of Polforia and strategic interest of the Northwestern Human Kingdoms, this colony will thrive for about 180 years, being known as a Frontier of Humanity: as humanity's last border into the demon lands of Polforia, especially after the fall of many other settlements and the arrival of human refugees from Polforian colonies, they will develop quite an attitude and disdain to non-humans.

Development of Roccasone's Slave CultureEdit

The hard work of building of a colony in a difficult environment with hostile, non-human inhabitants in the new lands made conditions amenable to promoting slavery. Also, natural catastrophes -some ground quakes of the decade of 2330's- severely damaged the city, and destroyed bridges, mountain roads, and paths from the east side of the mountains to the west, which meant a further loss of contact to the west. This spurred the people of Roccasone to colonize greater areas of the western Polforia highlands, foothills and bordering lowlands.

In order to gain more 'peasantry' for these newly founded domains, the native peoples, various sorts of goblins, orcs, Beast People, Kanovs, and some blood elfs and sylvan elfs, and dwarves and 'barbarian' humans were conquered and captured, and made into slaves. Over time, the slavery instituted would become more and more a part of Roccasone society in a way that it hadn't been for the human parent nations to the west. The human nation of Roccasone would rebuild its bridges and roads with slave labor, the city's construction and trade would rise to new heights--but became a darker and different culture than Sargos and Degoland.

IndependenceEdit

Additionally, the once thriving Roccasone economy would suffer greatly due to the Sargonic Wars (2407-2419). While as a result of the war Roccasone will become independent of the joint Sargonic-Degoland Kingdom (2411 a.a.H) , they at first supported the Sargonic in the war, and the proclamation of independence was instrumental to avoid the fall along with the rest of Sargos. Then, while Roccasone forces fought in the conflict, their presence was incidental, being much more important to them for economic interests:

Fall of the Roccasone StateEdit

Roccasone was hit very hard economically, and the once thriving city had now lost its markets to the human west, resulting in an even greater reliance on the slave trade. As well, no longer a Province of Sargos, this ended the stipendium sent yearly by Sargos to Roccasone to maintain their armies and fortifications.

Trade would once again improve markedly following the Sargonic Wars, but never gained again the situation previous to the war. Overall, the city continued, but its coffers were often empty and its military readiness in the form of knights, soldiers, castle maintenance and general military readiness would suffer from what it was prior to the Sargonic Wars. To fill the gap, slaves would even perform some supporting tasks in the municipal and military functions of the city, such as the city couriers.

The glut and disregard of slaves would lead to a great slave revolt which would rock the city around 2436 a.a.H. That is also the decade that the demons returned, forming the Second Dark Legion, and Roccasone would be the first human kingdom to fall as the armies of the Demons marched with their dark Banners to the west.

After Roccasone's FallEdit

The fall of their state made the people bitter survivors, as they had to escape, taking refuge in the west. The Kingdom of Sargos, after the battle of the Sargonic Plains, seeing it wouldn’t be anytime soon they would be able to launch an offensive and take back lost territory –as Roccasone-, despite the promises made to the Roccasone refugees, they would instead settle them forcefully in the southern lands of Sargos and the riverlands, to populate these lands, deserted after the demonic campaign.

The Roccasone survivors and their descendants, set among communities of grey elves and very different humans, along a border to the steppes of the Barlans in a dangerous and poor frontier will keep their cultural identity, with them never accepting the territories they had been settled by Sargos but as a temporary refuge, always harboring the desire to return to their “ancestral lands”.

In such a way, they will keep for about 200 years after the fall of their city their identity as people of Roccasone, until war seems to have crept up in these lands once more. The Third War of The Power was fought between 2633 - 2675 a.a.H. before it was ended by the Great Cataclysm. (see The Cataclysm)

The Descendants of RoccasoneEdit

Wanderers and MercenariesEdit

After and during the Great Cataclysm, this forced whole nations and peoples to migrate and become wanderers, seeking for new homes, safe for the apocalyptic events that had been lived. Among the displaced peoples, where the descendants of Roccasone.

Amongst them, a group of Nobles who claimed to be far descendants of Roccasone –along a mercenary army, survivors of the Third War of the Power-. roamed the northwest of Aels, working as a mercenary company –the “Children of Roccasone”- for some of the stronger lords and cities, while pillaging and ransacking small villages. Even after the long centuries that had happened, they kept in their memories the lands their ancestors had lost.

This band of nobles lead by Thulian Naft, descendants of a ruined nation now lived from place to place taking women, recruiting young boys, killing and taking to survive.

They took part of the Alailë Unification War at the losing side, being defeated the League Armies in the Battle of Lecroi by the forces of the future king of Alailë Louis I at the end of the year 2718 a.a.H, forcing the “Children of Roccasone” mercenary army led by Naft to retreat, crossing the mountains to the north of the Upperlands. As the band pushed north in to the mountains of the Upperlands at 2719 they came across rumors of a large newly settled orc city of Bludvar, settled by remnants of polforian orcs –Polforian green orcs, Brûmer red orcs and ozcura grey orcs-.

Learning of the existence of this orc realm, Thulian Naft, who was sick and tired of living day by day and sick of his own people not having a place to call their own, and while the lands where Roccasone once stood where now lost under the oceans, he decided this will be the closest they will ever be near the lands of their ancestors. Thulian Naft decided then, that these orcs would have to give these lands to the descendants of Roccasone:

"Who are these orc filth to have a place to call home, a place to sleep in peace, a place to shelter them from stormy nights and scorching days while we, descendants and heirs of these lands, scurry from place to place like vermin."

According to him, as descendants of Roccasone, this land was rightfully their legacy, as it was their right as natives, as the true heirs of Roccasone. It was he who reminded his people who they were and where they came from: "This land is here for us, to be given whenever we demand it." And now they are demanding it. This was once all owned by Roccasone, it was their right, as natives, as the true heirs of Roccasone, these lands belong to them.

As soon as their company honed their fighting skills and was large enough to take the new orc city of Bludvar, they attacked in the Siege and sacking of Bludvar (2722 a.a.H) experiencing much less orc resistance than they expected they destroyed most of the orcs cultural relics and killed all without restraint with very few casualties from their part. There were no prisoners, those captured alive were beheaded and skewered and displayed around the city's boundaries for all to see.

With such a resounding victory and morale for the people was as high as it could ever be, and the mercenaries and their families will settle down in the former orc settlement as the orc civilization was cleansed and rebuilt into a human city.

Naft kingdom history by turnip007-d7q123q

Foundation of the Kingdom of Naft. Rule of Thulian Naft (2730-2738)Edit

Due to their origins as a mercenary company that elected their own officers and captains, the first human government of Bludvar will be a municipality, that as well elected their government officials from the same officers that had led them to victory. In the immediate years after seizing Bludvar, they will continue an aggressive expansion policy against their non-human neighbors, to secure their borders, led by their successful and charismatic leader Thulian Naft.

Due to his popularity and successes, when after already having been elected for a third period as major of Bludvar –and general of the “Children of Roccasone”-, he decided that he will only accept the charge for a third period, if they accepted him instead as no longer only an elected major, but their king, as he presented evidence that according to his genealogists, he was a descendant of the kings of Roccasone.

As Thulian Naft proclaimed himself as king, there was no bitterness amongst the people as they accepted his new deserving title openly, and one of his first edicts will be to rename the city and State, Naft –after himself-, the second Roccasone.

As time went on, the city grew, and its people multiplied. The king already had an heir to the throne during this time. Naft, would have its first and only prince, Thios Naft, prince of Naft, heir of Roccasone, age 11 at the time. A lot like his predecessor, he trained very well and was very skilled at battle, though not as gifted as his father Thulian Naft. He too shared much disdain towards non-humans just like his father and the fellow people of Naft.

Rule of Thios Naft (2738-2814)Edit

King Thulian Naft, Ravager of Orcs, King of the first city and true heir of Roccasone died at the age of 60 in the mid year of 2738. He was survived by his son, Prince Thios age 17. Prince Thios Naft would begin his rule later in the year of 2738, adopting a policy of aggressive expansion of Naft, trying as well to gain for his kingdom a more important place in the international concert of nations of Aels, dragging his nation into several wars as the War of the Seven Realms (2746-2760) a.a.H. However, the defeats suffered in this war and of this foreign policy in general would make the reclusive and more isolationist factions of the government to gain influence over the king over the expansionism.

After the failures suffered at the War of the Seven Realms, king Thios Naft would not involve himself too much with the business of others especially non-humans, allowing his kingdom to become reclusive and shut itself out from the outside world, to only open up if the nation's interests were at the matter. As well, King Naft will enact strong anti non-human policies, being carried by the state the persecution and often extermination of non-humans within the nation's borders.

During his rule he would be criticized by other civilizations both human and non-human by the way they would treat non-human species within their realm.

Disregarding warnings and boycotts from other nations about the ways Naft would torture at unfathomable degrees of gruesome violence towards the seemingly innocent non-human species. These public mass killings and tortures would ensue for some years, appalling other nations at times. Naft would be indifferent to what was slain be it male, female, children, and even infants; a reputation for Naft and their ways soon became very apparent.

King Thios Naft and his Queen Beth would come to have six children and heirs to the throne, five sons and one daughter: Princes Thiritzio Naft, Thain Naft, Therris Naft, Thorbane Naft, princess Meridith Naft and the youngest son, prince Thulian II Naft.

While this seemed to secure the succession for King Thios, a successive loss of heirs happened: during the campaigns of 2757-2760 a.a.H in the War of the Seven Realms, both Thiritzio and Thain went missing in action in early 2760 at the aftermath of the battle of Hiel that was fought in the high mountainside west of Naft.

Therris as being next in line for the throne after his two eldest brothers were presumed killed, had a need to prove himself worthy of the throne by leading his company in a string of victories in the mountain passes of western Naft. He and his men were later to assist fellow men south of Naft beyond the other side of the mountain in Degoland where there it was where he was last seen in the Battle of Piel and was to be presumed deceased in 2770 at the age of 16.

Thorbane the fourth born son would have deceased of childbirth complications shortly after his birth in 2756.

Formation of the Elder CouncilEdit

The queen would have caught a fatal illness in mid 2803, in the midst of Chaos and wars that went on around these lands. She would die giving birth to the last surviving son Thulian II Naft in early 2804. As three heirs of Naft were deceased and having the youngest, Thulian II next in line for the crown and Meridith after him, King Naft made a Council full of the town's wise-men. This new form of government consisted of six Elders, Led by Thelios, a retired general and friend of the family personally chosen by the King himself. to better ensure the integrity and foothold of the Kingdom, this Council was to be called the "Elder Council"

There now were two authorities in the kingdom beginning in 2813. First and over-ruling authority was by the royal family known thereafter as "The Royal Authority" and the other authority was to deal with matters the royal authority could not get around to or were just matters and responsibilities given to them by the Royal Authority. This authority was of sorts the second chain in command known as the "Elder Council" or "Council Authority" or "Elder Authority".

Question of Succession (2814-2817)Edit

A year later at 2814 a.a.H King Naft would succumb to the same strange illness of unknown origin as the queens and die near year's end of 2815 at the age of 74. During the time of 2816 Thulian II Naft would have been next in line for the throne, but the elder council saw it to be a problem as Thulian II showed no sign of being capable of being a true leader or the rightful king of Naft. Being 11 at the time he was fairly weak, unmotivated and his skills with combat were unimpressive. A sensitive boy and showing sympathy towards all life, he was considered defective and this proved to be a problem for the kingdom's future which would surely be at jeopardy in their eyes.

But Meridith Naft the daughter, fifth born child and last in line for the crown was a far more promising candidate in the eyes of the Elder Council -she was indifferent to the lives of non-humans. She also proved to be remarkably gifted in combat, and had a ruthless warrior spirit like her grandfather.- Meridith shared the same ideals and disgust for non-humans as her father and the elder council. This was who the council thought to be a perfect fit, a true heir of her father, Thios Naft son of Thulian Naft Ravager of Orcs, King of the first city and true heir of Roccasone. This was who they wanted and this is who they needed!

But for this to happen, it was needed the removal of the Prince, Thulian II. By the end of the year 2816 the high council paid an outside force to kidnap Thulian II alive and take him far away from the lands. When news of the disappearance of the kind boy Thulian II Naft, the heir of Naft, was spread; there was no other choice but to pick the next in line for the crown. By early 2817 the crown had taken rest at the head of the new royal authority; Her Imperial Highness Meridith Naft daughter of Thios Naft son of Thulian Naft, Ravager of Orcs, King of the first city and true heir of Roccasone shall now henceforth be known as the new royal authority and the Queen of Naft.

Queen Meridith's Rule (2817- ? )Edit

As of 2817 a.a.H. Meridith was now the new queen of Naft at the age of 19, she would rule with an iron fist not only showing indifference towards non-humans but humiliating them as well, continuing the policies of persecution and extermination that had been led by her father, being known for being especially ruthless and cruel while doing so. Aside of these anti non-human policies, she sought out for outside trade and growth of the kingdoms economy.

While during her father's rule –especially after the defeats suffered at the Seven Realms War- the kingdom was shut to the outside world; she would abolish this tradition and open her kingdom's gates for traders of foreign lands. During her rule, Naft seemed to have grown at a fairly rapid rate, allowing trade for foreign money and the economy began to swell. Naft got to be known for its trade goods, especially silk, velvet, fabrics and trendy clothing materials.

Thanks to the economic development of Naft, this allowed Queen Meredith to increase the funding for the defense forces of Naft, increasing dramatically her armed forces, expanding, modernizing, training and equipping them, all done within the first five years of rule between the 2817-2822 a.a.H.

GeographyEdit

Territory by turnip007-d7pt9mn

The historic limits of the region were to the north of Ingostadt, Reivelin and Piel to the east, the Dargoinan Mounts to the southeast, Carlotterdam to the southwest. To the west, extended the sea of Polf.

GovernanceEdit

During their existence, the government of Naft changed, but largely remained a monarchy that had a trend at the centralization and concentration of power towards an absolute monarchy until the XXXI century, when was forced by popular pressure a constitution.

GovernmentEdit

During the time of the second king of Naft Thios Naft, it was instituted aside of the King -the Royal Authority-, that had all the powers, the Elder Council -Elder Authority-, who had mostly a council function, their power subordinate to the one of the king, but as was seen after the death of King Thios, they tried to extend their sphere of influence beyond the one they had under the king, to not be any longer a subordinate power.

While the first two kings of Naft were male, and the succession originally was for the eldest, male legitimate son, after the rule of Queen Meredith it will became very common that Naft will be ruled by women as she abolished this tradition and changed how the crown views its next heir from first born sons to first born child making it so that the crown no longer sees gender but now only having order of birth as rule for next heir.

LawEdit

Naft didn't have a written constitution until the XXX Century, but meanwhile had a consuetudinary constitution. The first origin of the law will be the edicts of the King, but as well was a responsibility of the Elder Council. Naft was known for their bigotry and hatred toward non-humans, existing several laws against them, that legalized their prosecution. This anti-human policies affected as well the non-human traders, who in case they were to trade with Naft had to pay a special tax, the "Gift of the Queen", special tax that was -as said in the name- a direct gift for the treasury of the Queen of Naft.

Foreign RelationsEdit

After the disaster that was for Naft the involvement in the War of the seven Realms, this will make Naft more reclusive and isolationist in their foreign relations, specially as their violent repression of their non-human populations will be condemned by several of the neighboring kingdoms. However during the rule of Queen Meridith this policy will turn to a more open one. In general, they will have trade relations with Degoland, the Upper Lands and the Cyrvian League -a commercial league of cities in Cyrvia-, though sometimes trade conflicts will lead to some hostilities. Naft will be as well involved in the War of the Thirty Princes, the Joaquintopian Wars, the Tri-Fecta Wars and other armed conflicts.

MilitaryEdit

While Naft originated from a mercenary company -the "Children of Roccasone", after the unfortunate wars of Thios Naft, the military decayed and decreased in size, discipline and quality, until a process of modernization by Queen Meridith, and under her rule will be instituted a Queen's Guard called the Naftketeers.

EconomyEdit

Traditionally, Naft had only two main cities, the city of Naft and add port name city here. Most of the people of Naft were dedicated to agriculture, but as well, due to the presence of woods, there were many shipyards on the Naft shores, where there was as well an important fishing activity.

They exported as well, salt and iron.

Inland, in the city of Naft, they will gain a name in the textile trade</span>, especially for their silk, velvet, fabrics and trendy clothing materials.

DemographicsEdit

The region where Naft will be located, before the arrival of the descendants of Roccasone was predominantly goblinoid -Polforian green orcs, Brûmer red orcs and Ozcuras grey orcs, aside of goblins and hobgoblins-, who had a city called Bludvar. Aside of the orc majority, there was a significant minority of humans, kanovs and blood elves, along with some minor demons. the arrival of the Roccasone humans and the continued politics against non-humans will completely change the composition of the population, with the extermination of all the orc-goblin population of Bludvar and the displacement of the non-humans from the new realm of Naft. In religion, the region was strongly protestant Christian.

CultureEdit

LanguagesEdit

The official language of Naft was cyrvian -which was introduced for administrative purposes-, but as well was spoken low cyrvian, ingish, Carlotti and Nafteer, a local dialect that will develop in Naft. These languages enjoyed state protection and some promotion, unlike the banned non-human languages as the low polforian.
