U R D U R, Caverna trasgii

Race: Ur Dur

Class: Goblin

Species: Goblinoid

Other names: Cave goblin, Rasgo, trasgo, Hettasgo, Pigrasgo

Allegiance: Dark Legion of Demons

Ur-Dur are goblinoids of the Goblin family, and they were bred by the Demon Lord Satman the Apprentice in the depths of his fortress in the Unholy Mountain of Hortann, as a second experiment to replace as soldiers of the dark legion the Hattak -or fauns-.

DescriptionEdit

  • The Ur-Dur live in caves and the underworld, and few times get to the surface.
  • Even for goblinoid standards, they are poorly intelligent, they are among the least intelligent class of goblin.
  • If they extended themselves to their total size, they might be as tall as a hobgoblin, but they always advance with a quadruped's gait. Because of that, they almost never use tools or weapons, unless they were properly trained to keep the weapons and not to drop them. Using weapons being something completely different.
  • The Ur Dur have as well much smaller cousins, the "Pigrasgos", which look like the Ur Dur but in smaller dimensions, and are even less intelligent.

The Ur Dur are called Cave Goblins as they mostly live in the underworld of Kazrrad. They are larger than most of the Green Goblins, but pygmy versions exist that are much smaller. They have a range of big, projecting faces, particularly nose, but even the smallest is large and long. Many of the Ur Dur are brownish in color, as opposed to green, with black hair that they often cut and shave given the dust and filth filled environments that they live, with only a pony tail, but their body hair is fairly profuse.

They tend to walk hunched, and frequently move about in a quadruped fashion, although this may be somewhat of an environmental factor, as living in caves, they do not always have head space to stand erect, and flat surfaces are not always common. If they were to stretch out, the larger categories of Ur Dur goblins would be as tall as a Dark Elf equivalent, and might weigh similarly as skinny dark elves. Their proportions do not always seem so unlike humans, given their awkward posture.

  • Tall Versions of Ur Dur might stand about 140 - 155 cm in height if fully erect.
  • More typical Ur Dur average about 120-140 cm in height.
  • The Pygrasgos stand about 90-100 cm in height in current estimations.

The Ur Dur skulls are long and fairly sloping and flat, suggesting small brains, which would be indicative of their intelligence. The Pygrasgo skulls are especially flattened on top, not surprising given their particularly low intelligence.

Although examples of Ur Dur with better nutrition and training suggests more capable mental acuity. Particularly the armies of Ur Dur that inhabited the Modern era world of Aiers suggesting the influence of environment on brain development. Even so, Ur Dur were never much known for intellectual brilliance.

They are cursed in that they live for the least length of time of the goblinoids, and only half as long as humans or Kanovs. That means that they develop from infancy and age twice as fast as humans, so they have little time to learn before they reach adulthood. What is most damaging is that their females are capable of being pregnant quite often, and that they give birth to litters of offspring of about five or six pups, as opposed to the single or dual births that are more typical of the natural goblinoids like the green goblins or orcs. Hence they often outrun their food supply and spread about in Kazrrad or the surface, with tribes attacking each other and certainly anyone else. They will think nothing of cannibalism, indeed, that is a regular food source for them.

Some Ur Dur take on signs of more advanced culture

Their intelligence is also quite low, it should be noted, however, that those Ur Dur in frequent contact with other races, and in less squalid conditions, show far more intelligence and organizational ability than is often credited to them. The pygmy versions are less intelligent yet, their small size might well be an evolutionary response to cavernous environments of hard living, with smaller and less developed bodies being necessary for life, much like the dwarfing effect on islands?

Differences with Natural GoblinoidsEdit

In general, the natural "flat" and "long" faced goblins are smaller than the Ur Dur -the exception being the Pigrasgos, the pigmy Ur Dur, the smallest Ur Dur goblins-. However, the size difference is not very visible, due to the crouching position used by the Ur Dur, while the other goblins stand more straight, like the orcs.

The size difference may be result of the mixed blood of the Ur Dur.

  • The natural goblins only have one to two children at a time, like the orcs. They can have more, but it's less common. Litters of pups are meanwhile average among Ur Dur.
  • Many scholars defending the point of view that the Ur Dur aren't true goblins at all, especially due to being a demonic created race, bred not only from goblins, but several other creatures.

However, for the demons they were goblins, and as well, for most of the people.

OriginsEdit

The Ur Dur Goblins -raised from a breed of many races, mostly green goblins, and as well Duendes and more- were created too late to take a part in the First War of the Power, and when the Fortress of Satman in Hortann was besieged and sacked, the few Ur Dur hid in the more deep dungeons: later, they will surge from the ruins, to become a plague and bane of Aiers.

The Ur Dur are the bred creations of the demons of Aiers, as one of their servitor races. They can be slavish and easily dominated by those stronger than they, but reproduce quickly, much too quickly. The idea was that the demons would never run out of Ur Dur soldiers or slaves. The result was that their numbers will become too great to manage, many escaped their pens at the end of the First War of the Powers, and reproduced in the wild.

Ecological Damage to other Races and SpeciesEdit

An unintended consequence was that the Ur Dur would eventually spread and compete against other races. The natural goblins would be badly hurt by this, with their numbers being displaced or absorbed via crossbreeding by the prolific Ur Dur. Large goblinoids like trolls would be changed by Ur-Dur predation on their pups or by crossbreeding by the large goblinoids ruling the Ur Dur as chiefs. Harpies would also be severely affected by Ur-Dur predation on their eggs in their nests.

But the appearance of the Ur Dur surely meant a great change in the ecological balance of Aels. For as the Ur Dur expanded, they took much of the territory that other species used.

First of all, the other goblin tribes of southern Aels, by inter-racial relations, soon became a part of the Ur-Dur bands, losing much of their racial and cultural identity.

Then, the Hattak fauns were out-competed of many territories, and of their role in the dark legion -and as well, many bred with Ur-Dur.-

Then, the green orcs of southern Aels as well saw a growing number of Ur Dur hobgoblins. basically, what stopped them from being lost within the Ur-Dur tribes, was that they ended under the Kokto Orcs -black orcs-, instead. So in the end, they disappeared as well.

The trolls and ogres, big and feared hunters, needed extensive hunting grounds, and their territories were lost to the much more numerous Ur Dur. While they might eat Ur Dur, the Ur Dur might as well eat their pups: after the Ur Dur appeared, the numbers of trolls and ogres, outside of the ones domesticated by the dark legion, fell. Some emigrated to the north, and others became part of Ur Dur bands -originating such large Ur Dur half-breeds such as the Frogos!-

While the Ur Dur expansion to the plains and lowlands was stopped by humans (Kingdom of Purpurian, Enkel), they advanced across the mountain ranges of Aels. There, they will endanger as well the harpies and Car'Had, as they ate the eggs in their nests -which forced the harpies and Car'had, to move their nests to mountains and cliffs where only by flight could one could reach.

The dragons of the mountain ranges of Nohalion as well saw many of their eggs eaten by the goblins!

The dwarves defeated them several times, but due to the constant wars, their numbers began to grow fewer and fewer, and the trade routes across the mountains, swelling with Ur Dur, became dangerous.

And the Ur Dur kept expanding and expanding, growing in numbers: the human and kanov kingdoms were to destroy, every few years, large hordes of goblins, that, while easily defeated for them, meant every time the need to abandon for the time farmlands, and to mobilize armies.

They as well were a danger to the drow, and goblin-drow wars became recurrent as well.

Moving in kazrrad, they arrived to Hieyoks and Zarhuy. However once there, they didn't advance much further, due to the relative harshness of their entry points into the continent, their southernmost expansion being in Kaiehm.

And so, in Aels, between the Ur Dur, Kokto Orcs and the Ozcura Orcs -demon servers-, the numbers of the natural goblin and orcs fell irremediably.

In the south, the absolute dominance of the Ur Dur in population was only contested by the existence of the Koktos of Tok-Thoria. But there, they became the most common goblin. Indeed, the Ur Dur-Kokto Hobgoblin became almost the backbone of the legion of Hortann.

As can be seen, the appearance of Ur Dur was quite catastrophic to many species in Aels! Even if most of them were allied with the demons!
