The Werewolf Wars (3076-3084) was an armed conflict fought in the Highlands, in Degoland, Upperland, Naft and northern Aläile, between human forces -mostly the Degoland Royal Army, but as well forces from other states- and the werewolf confederation formed under the White Fang.
It was in general a low intensity conflict with some pitched battles, that ende with the victory of humanity and annexation of the highlands to Degoland and the Upperlands. However, instead than facing eradication of all the werewolves, the White Fang werewolf confederation was able to achieve a truce with the humans, which accepted the werewolves as peoples, granting them their lands and hunting grounds in the highlands, with the compromise of the werewolves of accepting human sovereignty over their territories, and abandoning some practices of the werewolf-kind -such as eating and hunting humans and other peoples.-
BackgroundEditAfter the Third War of the Power and the Cataclysm, the great Demon Lords vanquished... However, this wasn't the case with many of the smaller demons.
With their masters gone and so their kingdoms, the lesser demons followed different paths. Some tried to found new kingdoms and continue the war against humanity, but such attempts will be short lived. Most decided to retreat to the wilderness, and live in exile or hiding, afraid of the rising power of humans. Others, meanwhile, come to live among humans, in hiding, and in some communities, openly.
However, not all demons did so.
Several werewolf clans -specially the ones who where closer with the Dark Legion, rather than the free packs-, while they hided in the wilderness, joining in their wolf form the wolf packs, or hiding with person form among humans, or doing in the distant mountains community, soon began again to prey on their old enemies: the humans.
Not all werewolves did so, but the werewolf attacks, specially in southern Aläile and western Aels, will begin in the 2800's to the 2900's the Werewolf Witch Trials and the Hunt of the Werewolves. Thought more than a hunt, this often become a war, as some of the larger packs tried direct military confrontation.
This will mean the persecution and almost extinction of werewolves in the south, forcing them to retreat to the Highlands.
The Confederation of the Highlands: under the Banner of the White FangEdit
For the 3000's, most of the western aelian werewolf clans had retreated to the Highlands. With the reduced hunting grounds, the diverse clans who had taken refugee in the highlands began to clash between themselves for the lack of resources. The werewolf was becoming the wolf of the wolf.
As well, they contested for the same resources here with orcs and kanovs alike... and with humans groups to keep their pressure, advancing further and further into the Highlands, and making the situation always worse and worse.
However, by the 3060's, among the werewolf clans will rise the White Fang, who will unite under their banner a confederation of Werewolf clans, to stop the fighting among themselves, and to focus their forces instead against the progressive advance of humanity, which was bringing the highlander werewolves to the brink of extinction.
As several Degoland settlements in the Highlands -settlements who hunted werewolves, and who occupied their lands- where destroyed by the confederation, Degoland local authorities began to be concerned by this and decided to send hunters to the Highlands, to punish the "beasts".
However, as the werewolves united under a single banner, rather than being hunted and pursuit, the werewolves for the first time in decades fought back, defeating the punitive forces contracted by Degoland local authorities.
The Local authorities, concerned by the rise of a new threat, requested for further assistance from the central government, who at first disregarded the threat of some wolves, issuing the local authorities only more stashes of munitions and modern rifles.
More militiamen, hunters and monster-hunters will be raised by local authorities: but they weren't fighting now stragglers or errant, single werewolves, but warpacks, and in a series of ambushes, more and more where killed... and more of the weapons issued by Degoland to the local authorities, fell into werewolf hands.
By the 3078's -after some 2 years of skirmishes- the central authorities couldn't ignore any longer the problem as only a local "pest control" issue, as the White Fang Confederation attacked, sacked and burned the town of Herselbeek.
For the first time, regional military forces of Degoland where send against the werewolves, but they by now where well equipped and continued to use they hit-and-run tactics, keeping the degoland forces circling in the highlands for months, before annihilating them in the battle of Dennenslaan, near the end of the 3078.
After that victory, the Werewolf clans will win the support of other highlander forces -kanovs, humans and orcs-, who will join them, attacking several towns and villages, and as well, capturing the fort of Vorstdaal in the "bloody christmas" of 3078.
The Kingdom of Degoland mobilised then an army of 20.000 men, to march to the highlands: but after some attempts to march during a harsh winter into them, it was decided instead to wait for spring to advance in the now werewolf-controlled territory.
During this time, the highlander confederation -no anymore only a werewolf coalition- prepared their defences.
However, in the spring of 3079 a.a.H, the attempt of the Highlanders to face in symmetric war the Degoland Kingdom forces will result in a bloody defeat of the highlanders. Vorstdaal fort and the villages, where the highlanders had built fortifications, fell one after other. Soon, the Degoland commanders proclaimed victory, as they had dispersed and routed all opposing forces.
However, the second battle of Virstdaal, while a defeat of the Werewolf Confederation, it wasn't the end of the werewolf wars, as the werewolves will retreat to the highlands.
For the next years, the werewolves will continue the war in an asymmetric, guerrilla war, using in their side the mobility, and crossing the borders of Degoland to the Upperlands, Naft, Aläile and other neighbouring countries, where they settled basses and camps, and from where they acquired as well weapons to fight the Degoland Army.
As the war continued, due the costs of it, first Degoland tried to reduce their military presence, having thought that they had pacified the highlands: but as the attacks increased -crossing the national borders-. A first answer was to develop an increasing number of forces, and later, to create a series of fortifications and fortified posts to control the Highlands.
However, as long the werewolves had safe haven in the highlands across the border, Degoland wasn't going to be able to defeat the werewolves, so they made alliances with the Upperlands and Aläile to suppress the rebel werewolf groups.
Then will began the final phase of the war, between the 3082-3084, in which there was an internationalisation of the war. Attacked in their former safe-haves outside of the borders of Degoland, the Werewolves bite, and bit hard in a last attempt of furious resistance, with the "flying columns" or raiding warpacks travelling across the countryside of all the High Lands, raiding and destroying, while avoiding fight with mayor enemy formations.
Degoland, the Upperlands, Aläile and Naft had to commit more and more forces, and despise of this, they seemed unable to protect their populations to the werewolf attacks, and to put an end to the threat of the werewolves who fought in such a irregular way.
However the true is that the werewolves where on their last forces, and when in the battle of Tessenderl (3084) the forces of the werewolf warlord Nikko where circled in the ruined city under the action of artillery and surrounded by numerous forces of a Degoland-Upperlandian coalition, while it surprised the Degolandian that a werewolf warlord accepted to parlay, the truth is that if the war continued the werewolves of the Highlands would be facing extinction.
The Peace of TessenderlEdit
While Nikko the White Fang surrendered as his forces, the werewolf clans, rather than being annihilated, where granted survival by the truce that was signed.
While they renounced to their independence, recognising the rule of Degoland over the highlands -and other territories where recognised to the Upperlands, Naft and Aläile-, the werewolves where recognised as peoples rather than beasts, and given rights and duties to the national states they where part of. As well, the werewolves had to ban and stop some of their practices, such as eating humans, and had hunting rights being limited only to wild animals. As well, they children where to assist to human schools, and to accept priests to evangelise them: while this meant to renounce to a great part of their culture, learning human languages, religions and culture, it meant as well a compromise by the human states to build some infrastructure in the Highlands for them, and as well, granting them survival as a specie in the Highlands, stopping the werewolf witch hunts and trials, and as well, granting them hunting grounds.
In the same way, other groups of highlanders that supported in one moment or other the werewolves, signed similar treaties.
For the last decades of the 3000's and during the 3100's, there will be an important effort by Degoland and the other human nations to quickly incorporate the werewolves to the national life, erasing the cultural differences as quick as possible, making them to share religion, language and education.
the Werewolves will renounce to much of their own culture and adopt the human culture as their own. There would be as well an important emigration to the coastal cities and other nations, as werewolves were no longer hunted down: but as the traditional clan systems broke, quickly the werewolf identity was lost.
However, for the 3200's, there will be a revival of the werewolf traditions and culture, by werewolf activist groups.
