The White Party of the High Elves of Ushaenor

The White Party is one of the two basic political parties that the High elves of the 'elf continent' of Ushaenor follow and support. The party is based on ideas of trade, innovations and imperial ambitions, and is an 'international' organization and philosophy found in many of the kingdoms and city states of the Silver High Elves. It is the 'liberal' wing of high elf political and social philosophy.

There is not truly a single national home or central authority for either party. Instead, they are more of a pair of conflicting organized philosophies that span borders within the loose Empire of Whide Axis, Arbitrated more than ruled by the so called Emperor of the Elves. Both philosophies might well be found practiced in the same state, and often states face conflict within their borders, or even between separate states, as customs and governance systems might be at odds.

DescriptionEdit

'Liberal'Edit

The White Party is based on an imperial past, and the desire to have the Empire of Whide Axis of the High Elves to be political whole, with centralized authority. Ideally, so as the high elves could support each other and either promote a return to an expansionist policy, or later, to deal with other races in world affairs.

Part of the White Party's imperialism comes from the Elf wars between the High elves and the blue skinned Hakes of the fallen Hake Empire, whereas the Hakes still have remnants in southern Ushaenor as a remaining danger. The White Party would like to end the conflict with the Hakes one way or the other?

While the White Party has magic users in its ranks and in leading positions as most elven societies, the policy of the White Party is much more likely to place value on technical developments rather than relying on magical practices or protecting a magical economy from developments of technology that might replace magic users.

Egalitarianism?Edit

Magic practitioners tend to be given the greatest support and authority in High Elf societies, and the kingdoms and other states under the White Party are probably no exception. But soldiers and traders might well advance to an elite status as well.

It is unlikely that White Party polities are very accepting of the Hake and Darhake members of their communities as equals.

But states adhering to the White Party are more likely to operate schools and colleges that promote technical sciences as they do magic learning.

The White Party would most likely hold dominant sway to include kingdoms and states which are mostly inhabited by Silver High Elves. But this should probably not be seen as an absolute rule as exceptions could easily exist.

ImperialistsEdit

Despite the past glories of the Empire of Whide Axis, the 'empire' exists largely in name only, with a High Court that arbitrates disputes but has insufficient political and military power to truly force strong states into compliance. Most White Party dominated states would like stronger centralized power in the High Court, or, more extremely, would wish some other system centralizing power into the empire as a whole nation. But not many states would wish to give up that much control, so the various High Elf states can differ markedly from each other, even those of the same ethnicities or of the same 'color' politics of White or Purple.

With the loss of the emperor Altarin in the 23rd Century, imperial power has fallen to the point that some High Elf states are effectively sovereign nations. These states acknowledge imperial power only as a sense of tradition and suspiciously guard against efforts to actually unite the empire and advance imperial aims. The 'White Party' as the ideals of many would like to change this to a more cooperative and unified continental system.

So 'White States' tend to be out-looking politically, and often with systematic economic and trade relations with other 'white states'. As these states tend to be smaller, in less secure or productive lands, this policy is helpful in ensuring some prosperity and keeping the peace between high elf peoples that might otherwise be more desperate and warring with each other.

'White States' also have to deal with Hakes, Darhakes, Humans and other races in greater numbers and regularity than those of the 'Purple States'. These other races have come to live in the greater numbers in South Ushaenor, and later, in north-east Ushaenor. Silver High Elves are the dominant high elves in these mixed countries, or have borders in 'non Light Elf' lands where non High Elves are relegated.

HistoryEdit

Early (Before the Apparition of Humanity)Edit

Disparities in Elf Wars Between Gold and Silver High ElvesEdit

It is unknown when the politics of the Empire of Whide Axis came to diverge. Most likely the seeds were laid in the prosecution of the elf wars, and 'other' High elf division of 'Golden High Elves' and 'Silver High Elves'. Most likely in that the mid and late-term victories in the elf wars were the time the Hake kingdoms were conquered or lands cleared of Hakes were by the by the Silver High Elves of Southern Ushaenor. Given that they developed their own holdings in less favorable conditions, near warzones where fighting would break out as the Hakes were pushed ever back, there was a greater desire for a unified empire to prosecute the elf wars and maintain order in times of peace.

Ebb and Flow of Imperial PowerEdit

However, the Golden High Elves, and the Purple Party which is most often associated with them, increasingly opposed a strong empire with strong leadership as they were already established in their own kingdoms which were conquered and 'cleansed' earlier in the elf wars. They also had the greater established power and leadership positions in the empire, and could not be easily forced into compliance for the good of the whole empire. Over time, and due to the High elf strategy of flanking the Hakes with extra-continental colonization, the leadership began to shift towards the Silver High Elves who continued the late era of conquests and took on the greater amount of colonization of the continents of Aels, Zarhuy, and Hieyoks.

Age of CalamitiesEdit

Containment of the Hake PeopleEdit

Imperial power had grown, however, with the general defeat of the Hake People, the need for central authority faded.

Speculation: It is possible that the Hake remaining states were allowed to continue so as to preserve them as some 'traditional enemies'? It might also be that those wanting a centralized authority actually WANTED an avowed enemy in the continent so as to preserve the need for a centralized authority, otherwise, the empire might have fallen apart without the 'threat' of the Hake remnants?

Development and Independence of ColoniesEdit

During the colonization efforts, scores of city-state or larger colonies had been planted and grown over almost a thousand years. The colonies founded by the Silver High Elves outnumbered those of the Golden High elves, which caused a shift of power towards centralized authority. But not long or strong enough to create a unified empire. The colonies of both Silver and Gold High Elves ALSO tended to declare independence or become reluctant to support a strong centralized empire. Eventually, the far flung colonies may have only hurt the goals of the imperialists, mostly exemplified by the White Party.

Humans and DisastersEdit

In the First and Second Centuries, word had reached the states of Ushaenor and the High Court of the Emperor of Whide Axis of a miraculously powerful new race that appeared on the continent of Zarhuy, reputedly from the sky, the Humans. However, the High Court was slow to investigate, and just before a delegation was sent to ascertain the full truth of the humans, global disasters struck about the year 50 a.a.H.

So began the Age of Calamities, in which earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis racked all the world to some extent or another until well into the 2nd Century, followed by the Age of Invasions where Orcs and the newly appeared race of Kanovs, and now in-miraculous race of humans spread to new lands in invasions for the next several centuries. There was also the dreadful horror of the disease known as the Curse of the Doroz which killed large populations of elves worldwide.

Most of the colonies of High Elves were destroyed, particularly as so many were coastal cities. Most of the remainder were destroyed or conquered by invaders. The few that remained also maintained their independence.

Speculation: The disasters harmed many nations in Ushaenor, but those of the Golden High Elves were better able to recover and had faced less damage. The states of the Silver elves might have faced more damage, and also had to face renewed efforts from the Hakes, and the immigration of humans, which led to more international cooperation between southern high elf states. This might have further hardened the philosophies of the Purple and White Parties?

Human ImmigrantsEdit

Early in the 6th Century a.a.H., human people sailed from the Viborg region of the continent of Zarhuy to Southern Ushaenor. These migrants were allowed to settle for the wish of a larger labor force, as the high elf population centers were still lowered due to elven slow reproduction and the catastrophic !rst and 2nd Centuries, and that such uncertainties had lowered birthrates. So, the humans were allowed to stay, and became known as the Latavericans. However, as their short generations passed, their populations quickly increased as a very quick pace relative to how elves live through time.

This would cause a great deal of alarm and mistrust, and so the Latavericans were sent to live in the borderlands near the blue skinned Hakes, where they were to provide a barrier to the ancient elven enemies of the High Elves, and perhaps to dispossess the Hakes. For being uprooted, and then living with Darhakes and Hakes in the borderlands, the Latavericans often were of various hostile opinions of their High elf 'hosts'.

It is highly likely that the early optimism of dealing with and using humans was due to the trade minded White Party, which had seemed to have achieved a dominance in the apparatus of the empire and in electing a new emperor? In any case, the empire would fight other waves of human migrations, but Emperor Azra'l I decided that the migrations could not be stopped, and would allow a settlement to the northeast of Ushaenor of more humans who would become known as the Ushavericans in hopes that they would aggressively defend the coasts against other humans arriving. But this decision was not to the liking of the Purple Party and the High elves of north Ushaenor. They would no longer look the emperor for their protection and formed a military league headed by the leading Purple Party city-state of Dahl'Haran to guard the Ushavericans to their east, and to aggressively prevent further migrations and invasions.

LaterEdit

White HermitEdit

It is not known when the differences between the two parties became intractable, or achieved their current form, but it is known from the recorded events of the High Elf Belád Bonceduil, often known as the White Hermit that suggest that by the 20th Century the differences had become fully dysfunctional between Purple and White political philosophies. The White Hermit having traveled about Ushaenor and facing scorn for his attempts at technological innovations which flew in the face of Purple Party dogma. Also, he was part of the White Party early in his life, and that the two parties had come to warfare that was ended by arbitration by the Emperor of the Elves.

AltarinEdit

In the 23rd Century, humans from Aels came to the High Court and begged for aid against the Demonic Dark Legion. The Emperor, Altarin saw this as an opportunity to break the deadlock against the obstructionist Purple Party, and advance imperial goals such as founding new colonies and achieving a political unity.

The event, and his uncommon strength of charisma managed to lead to the political achievement of the White and Purple Concordate in a leading 'capital' of the Purple Party of Dahl'Haran. This agreement was in itself a major event for imperial authority given the hostile relationship. Given that Altarin was able to call a suspension to the White and Purple infighting which was nearly rising to a civil war, was able to raise vast armies, mountains of supplies and ship them to another continent, all while these very events reinvigorated centralized imperial power was nothing short of extraordinary.

However, Altarin would ultimately disappear in the war, almost certainly killed with his death unacknowledged by his White Party supporters due to the difficult and hostile politics of the high elves, and the obstructionism of the Purple Party in the late war effort. The White Party needed a 'live' emperor to finish the war, and begin the new policy of colonization. But, the Purple Party would be successful in using this 'disappearance without death' to prevent the office of Emperor from being filled again by any claimants.

This was not considered the end of the high elf empire, but it was the end of any serious hope of restoring political unity or an effective centralized authority in the Empire of Whide Axis.
